2018 Nissan Leaf: Full Details by September, Sweetened Lease Terms in the Meantime

Nissan IDS Concept

-

Deliveries of the long-anticipated 2018 Nissan Leaf are expected by the end of the year. And while there’ve been some spy photos, hints from executives, concept cars, and healthy speculation, Nissan still hasn’t confirmed much about the completely new, second-generation version of its all-electric hatchback.

-

Except now, it has disclosed that the world premiere for the 2018 Leaf will be in September. According to Brian Maragno, director of Leaf sales and marketing for North America, the automaker plans to reveal full specs, pricing, trim levels, and features at that time. And until the new car’s launch, it’s offering some sweetheart deals for many of those leasing the current Leaf.

-

To give Leaf drivers more incentive to stay in the fold, Nissan is offering easy lease extensions for those with leases expiring in 2017—for a year in some cases, or until taking delivery of a new 2018 Leaf—and a chance to waive three monthly payments. This extension is risk-free. Maragno says they’re only asking that lessees hold on to the car until the premiere; then, after they’ve had a chance to see the new one, if they still want to turn in an older Leaf and take their business elsewhere, they can. Existing Leaf lessees may also purchase their cars at a reduced price; Nissan will treat it as a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle, which extends the limited warranty and roadside assistance.

-

Asking the Leaf Loyal to Have Faith

-

Maragno, who pointed to the especially strong relationship Nissan has with Leaf owners, says that these incentives aim to help bridge existing drivers to the new model. “We’re asking them to extend without knowing all the information about the new car yet, so it only makes sense for us to help with that extension.”

-

Given the dearth of information, those who drive a Leaf now might understandably be tempted not only by the Chevrolet Bolt EV that is already on sale, offering a 238-mile range and starting at $37,495, but by the upcoming Tesla Model 3, which is expected to offer at least a 215-mile range in its base $35,000 guise and begin arriving this fall (assuming Tesla meets its target date). There’s also the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, with a lower $30,335 base price and a 124-mile range that, while significantly shorter than Bolt or  Model 3’s range, can still go father on a charge than the 2017 Leaf’s 107-mile range. The Ioniq Electric arrives in April.

-

Nissan IDS concept

-

The 2018 Nissan Leaf is expected to remain an affordable compact hatchback but to purge some of its EV weirdness. Several battery packs will likely offer a choice of longer driving ranges up to and over 200 miles. And in design, the new Leaf is expected to closely follow the design themes and details teased in the automaker’s Sway concept from the 2015 Geneva auto show and to feature some of the autonomous technology previewed in the IDS concept from the Tokyo auto show last fall.

--2018 Nissan Leaf Spied: Will Offer Longer Range, Less Weird Styling-Nissan Upgrades the Battery—and the Price—on Base-Model Leaf EV-Nissan Leaf: Photos, Specs, Reviews--

“When we deliver this car to customers, we’re very confident that the all-new Leaf is going to exceed their expectations in terms of range, tech, design, and value,” said Maragno.

-

Current owners and lessees are urged to call Nissan North America’s concierge service at 855-467-3214, to discuss their options; as the deal might also extend to those who have newer cars with more time left on their leases.

CIA’s Alleged Foray into Car Hacking Should Come As No Surprise

Ceremonial Swearing-In Of Leon Panetta Is Held At CIA Headquarters

-

The Central Intelligence Agency may be sharpening its car-hacking skills in efforts to carry out “nearly undetectable assassinations.”

-

That’s the alarming conclusion reached by WikiLeaks, the multinational nonprofit that advocates for the disclosure of government secrets. The organization published nearly 9000 documents earlier this week that are believed to have originated from America’s top intelligence agency.

-

Among the disclosures were meeting notes taken in October 2014 that listed “vehicle systems” as “potential mission areas” for the agency. One item mentioned QNX, a Canadian company that makes software and embedded systems for millions of vehicles.

-

Details remain scant. The CIA has neither confirmed nor denied the authenticity of the documents, and QNX did not return a request for comment. Nonetheless, a WikiLeaks analysis makes a leap or two to lay out the prospect that CIA operatives are targeting adversaries via holes in automotive cybersecurity holes, leaving nary a trace.

“Let’s not be cavalier about our inability to detect and respond to failures.” – Joshua Corman, Atlantic Council
-
-
-
-

This has led to a smattering of frightening headlines in recent days, but the revelation should come as no surprise. Cyber researchers have warned for seven years now that cars contain vulnerabilities that allow hackers to commandeer control and tamper with steering, speed and brakes.

-

In an age when cyber breaches cost major corporations billions and hackers meddle in elections, it would only be natural to assume the CIA can leverage a growing number of attack entry points that lead into vehicles.

-

“Cyber is now a conflict domain,” says Joshua Corman, director of the Cyber Statecraft Initiative, a nonprofit that promotes leadership and engagement in international affairs and co-founder of iamthecavalry.org, a grassroots organization that focuses on issues where computer safety intersects with public safety.

-

What may be more eye-opening than the CIA’s alleged hacking into vehicles is the fact manufacturers have languished in addressing vulnerabilities that have been unearthed by researchers going back seven years. Almost all of today’s cars have no way of detecting or recording malicious activity that occurs on their networks, and almost all have no way of responding to a real-time infiltration.

-

-

Whether it is CIA operatives or any other hacker, they have no real need to cover their tracks because there currently are no tracks in the first place. In his testimony before Congress and work with auto industry executives, Corman has advocated for the installation of event data recorders in cars that would operate in the same vein as the so-called black boxes used in the aviation industry.

-

“Let’s not be cavalier about our inability to detect and respond to failures,” he said. “We need logging, black boxes, and over-the-air updates. For an investigation [by] the National Transportation Safety Board, they have to have forensically sound, tamper-proof evidence capture.”

-

A hypothetical case in point: In June 2013, journalist Michael Hastings died in a high-speed car crash in Los Angeles that, at least in some corners of the internet, warranted additional attention because of its unusual circumstances. Beyond the crash itself, Hastings had authored a groundbreaking story that ultimately cost U.S. Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal his career.

-
“We have found that an attacker who has compromised
-our car’s telematics unit can record data from the
-in-cabin microphone.” – UCSD/UW report, 2011
-
-
-
-

Put aside, for the moment, merits of the conspiracy theories that government operatives murdered Hastings as a retaliatory strike for the article, and a more practical problem emerges in a potential investigation of such a crash.

-

“I’ve heard from people about the theories with Michael Hastings, and I’ve calmly told them that, if you have forensically sound evidence capture in all vehicles, then there would be evidence of that,” Corman said. “Without it, you will sound crazy and no one will listen to you. The real issue here is that we don’t have evidence.”

-

Researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek caught the attention of the entire auto industry, not to mention the Department of Transportation, Department of Defense, and Homeland Security, in July 2015 when they showed it was possible to remotely manipulate the controls on a Jeep Cherokee traveling along a Saint Louis–area highway from halfway across the country in Pittsburgh.

-
Security researcher Chris Valasek offers details on the remote hack of a Jeep Cherokee at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas.

Security researcher Chris Valasek offers details on the remote hack of a Jeep Cherokee at the Black Hat hacker conference in Las Vegas.

-

But car hacking need not involve meddling with safety-critical components to have value for intelligence agencies. Forget running targeted individuals off the road; car hacking could be used for surveillance.

-

In 2011, researchers with the University of Washington and the University of California–San Diego reported that telematics systems such as General Motors’ OnStar and other features that permit voice-controlled phone calls could be manipulated to record conversations without subjects ever knowing.

-

“We have found that an attacker who has compromised our car’s telematics unit can record data from the in-cabin microphone,” they wrote. These capabilities “could prove useful to private investigators, corporate spies, paparazzi, and others seeking to eavesdrop on private conversations within particular vehicles.”

-

FRANCE-ENVIRONMENT-TRANSPORT-POLLUTION

-

The paper’s authors go on to write that adversaries could identify targets for such eavesdropping “quite quickly” in this manner.

-

Fast-forward a few years to a time when autonomous vehicles are prevalent on American roads, and the opportunities for the government to track the whereabouts of citizens or spy on their conversations start to proliferate. But again, this isn’t new information.

--Ransomware: The Next Big Auto Cybersecurity Threat?-How the Connected Car Will Defend against Hackers-Bipartisan SPY Act Pushes NHTSA on Cyberthreats--

Back in May 2014, five months before the CIA’s October meeting to discuss exploiting security holes in vehicles, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a report that made note that “autonomous cars present game-changing opportunities and threats for law enforcement.”

-

Written by the FBI’s Directorate of Intelligence and Strategic Issues Group, the report says that self-driving vehicles “open up greater possibilities for dual-use applications and ways for a car to be more of a potential lethal weapon than it is today.” Later in the document, the FBI notes that because of lidar sensors and GPS tracking, “surveillance will also be made more effective and easier.”

-

Sounds like someone at the CIA was listening.

2017 Audi S3 Tested: Freshened Duds, Similar Potency

2017-Audi-S3-PLACEMENT

-

Unlike its competitive set of pocket-size luxury hot rods, the Audi S3 carries a little Teutonic monkey on its back: the Volkswagen Golf R, which shares the wee Audi’s guts and MQB structure yet is both more practical and more affordable. While a finer polish has been given to the updated-for-2017 S3, including additional interior tech and minor performance tweaks, that comparison still weighs on Audi’s smallest sports sedan. One of Two Original Bullitt Movie Mustangs Reportedly Found in Mexico

bullitt w mcqueen 2

-

The collector-car world is abuzz with news that one of the two 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks used in the filming of the 1968 Steve McQueen movie Bullitt, which was long thought to have been scrapped, has been discovered in a junkyard in Mexico.

-

The other of the two cars is known to be in private hands, probably in Kentucky, but the recently discovered second Mustang appears to be the one with beefed-up suspension components and other amendments made for use in the action sequences in Bullitt, which features one of the best and most iconic car-chase scenes in movie history. The two Dodge Chargers used in the movie are both believed to have been scrapped, so the find doubles the number of verified Bullitt cars extant.

-

According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, the car was found in a scrapyard in Baja California by a man looking for vintage Mustangs that could be restored as replicas of the hero car, Eleanor, from another film, Gone in 60 Seconds. Eleanor replicas built in Paramount, California, by Ralph Garcia, Jr., use original 1967 and ’68 Mustangs to create cars that resemble the one used in the Jerry Bruckheimer remake from 2000 that starred Nicolas Cage. In the 1974 original, the Mustang was a 1971 model.

-

Garcia’s is just one of several companies building such replicas, but it was one of his associates who identified the hulk of the nearly 50-year-old Mustang in a scrapyard as a potential Eleanor candidate, acquired it, and sent it to a Garcia facility in Mexicali. After running a check on the vehicle identification number (VIN), Garcia realized he may have discovered the Bullitt car.

-

Bullitt Mustang jumps

-

Ford expert evaluator Kevin Marti, often called on by classic-car auction houses to verify the provenance of valuable cars, is quoted in the Times story. He authenticated the find using the VIN record and by inspecting the car to confirm it had the changes documented by the filmmakers at the Warner Bros. studios. These include strengthened suspension components and mounting points for movie cameras and lights.

-

Car historian and museum curator Ken Gross told the Times the car is “on the top-10 list of most desirable missing cars.” Marti sounded a cautionary note, though, saying the owners had started restoring the car and that it would have been more valuable in its as-found state. Garcia told the Times the car is not for sale, although he said he has received offers. He also said he had “big plans” for it and that it could show up at a Mecum or Barrett-Jackson auction in the future after a complete restoration.

--Retro Rewind: 2008 Dodge Charger SRT8 vs. 2008 Mustang Bullitt-Wheeled Valor: The 16 Greatest Hero Cars of All Time-Column: A ’67 Shelby Mustang and the Joy of Aimlessness --

Bullitt will be 50 years old next year, and many of those who saw the film when it was released are aging out of the car-collecting hobby. Younger collectors may have heard of the movie and its chase scene but may never have seen it, so take a gander at this video clip to see some of what all the fuss was about. Remember: This was before a lot of today’s special effects were available; it was shot on film, and the drivers really are doing this stuff. It’s not always really McQueen behind the wheel, but he did do a lot of his own “stunt” driving for this one.

Is the 860 Special Edition 10 Times the Toyota 86? Only for Those Who Flunked Math

2017 Toyota 860 Special Edition

-

With the demise of Toyota’s hipster brand, the former Scion FR-S sports coupe switched flat-brim hats, becoming the Toyota 86 for the 2017 model year. One hangover of its Scion days, however, was that the 86 was offered in only one trim level. Now that’s changing with the arrival of the 2017 Toyota 860 Special Edition.

-

Although its name might suggest that the new model is 10 times better than the standard version, the 860 in the name actually refers to the production total: 860 units finished in Halo White and another 860 in Supernova Orange (a hue exclusive to the Special Edition). With either color, buyers get a car dressed with a pair of black racing stripes, black side mirrors, a rear spoiler—also in black—and a black-chrome finish for the 17-inch wheels. The interior is black leather with orange contrast stitching on the seats, dash, door panels, steering wheel, handbrake, and shift boot.

-

2017 Toyota 860 Special Edition

-

Besides the visuals, the 860 Special Edition also brings a push-button ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated seats, and a larger TFT screen in the instrument cluster that includes g-meter and lap-timer functions in addition to trip information. Basically, it brings the 86 up to the equipment level of the Subaru BRZ Limited. There are no mechanical changes.

--2017 Toyota 86 Manual: Instrumented Test-2017 Subaru BRZ: Official Photos and Information-Toyota 86: Tests, Specs, Photos, Reviews--

The price for all this specialness is $30,040 with the six-speed manual gearbox and $30,760 with the automatic—which puts it $2895 above the price of the standard car. Sales start later this month.

Aston Martin Readies a Wave of New Product; Here’s What to Expect through 2020

Aston Martin Valkyrie
-The Aston Martin stand was among the busiest during the press days at the Geneva auto show, with a level of buzz and bustle out of proportion to the company’s still modest global sales. As well as launching its new AMR high-performance sub-brand, the British luxury maker formally named the Valkyrie hypercar and showed off the very blue DB11 Q concept, built to demonstrate the anything-goes capabilities of its bespoke ordering division.

-

In short, there was plentiful evidence of the product-led renaissance on which the brand is embarking, as well as how far it has come since a previous  Geneva show when the firm—as one company executive put it—“didn’t have anything new, so we just had four Vantage N400s in different colors.” Yet things are set to get even busier over the next few years.

-

With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of what we are expecting to happen over the next few years, based on our collected knowledge and conversations with senior Aston managers, including CEO Andy Palmer. It isn’t exhaustive—the company loves to pull surprises—but it gives a good impression of the deluge of Aston product we can expect.

-

2017: Beyond the Vantage AMR Pro and Rapide AMR models that were shown at Geneva, there will be a final-hurrah AMR version of the outgoing Vantage, which we’ve been told will come in both V-8 and V-12 flavors. The company also will be launching the gorgeous “continuation” DB4 GT, and we’ve heard rumors that we’ll be seeing a V-8–powered version of the DB11, which would be the first Aston to use the twin-turbo 4.0-liter AMG engine.

-

2018 Aston Martin Vantage (spy photo)

-

2018: Things don’t slow down in 2018, which will see three big launches. First will be the open-topped DB11 Volante, followed by the critically important all-new Vantage (shown in the spy image above), which will use Mercedes’ electronic architecture and V-8 engine. Finally, the new Vanquish will be introduced, using a tuned version of the DB11’s twin-turbocharged V-12. We also can expect at least one AMR variant, probably the DB11 coupe.

-

2019: There will be two more major launches in 2019: the DBX crossover SUV and the light-bendingly fast Valkyrie (pictured at top). The DBX initially will be launched with gasoline engines—barring surprises, those will be the AMG V-8 and Aston’s turbocharged V-12—and, according to Palmer, the design is nearly finalized and engineering work is advancing on schedule. Or, as he puts it, “We’re thoroughly pregnant.” More AMR and AMR Pro spinoffs will follow, drawn from the Vantage and Vanquish.

-

2020: At this point, we fall off the end of Aston’s funded model plan, as development on subsequent models will depend on the company’s meeting certain financial targets. Nevertheless, Palmer told us at Geneva that he wants to launch the son-of-Valkyrie mid-engined supercar in 2020, presuming it gets the green light. We also can expect to see a Vantage roadster and a Vanquish Volante cabriolet.

2021 and beyond: The crystal ball grows murky at this point, although 2021 is the earliest we could expect to see the launch of a new Lagonda sedan targeted directly at Rolls-Royce and Bentley.

    Insurance Coverage

If you are looking to increase your insurance coverage on your vehicle, the insurance company may require you to obtain a certified auto appraisal. If you have a custom car, truck or motorcycle, the insurance company won't pay you more than book value. Get a stated value appraisal to cover money spent customizing your vehicle. Have a collector or exotic vehicle?  Book value does not justify current market value. Have a certified auto appraisal done to ensure your vehicle is properly valuated.

    Accident

If you were involved in an accident and the insurance company deemed your vehicle a total loss, we can help.  If you don't agree with the insurance company's offer, you have the right to hire an independent certified appraiser to determine the actual cash value of your vehicle.  Our certified appraiser will go to the vehicle location, conduct the inspection and complete a certified total loss appraisal on your vehicle.  Total loss claims do require a negotiation phase which we will take care of for you at no additional charge!
